Question: “Acne and exercise”

Hi Mads, came across your web site on the internet. I have a huge problem with acne on my face and a little on my back.

Have been through many different treatments, like prescription medicine, expensive facials with professionals and have gone through a lot of expensive products. Have also used ole henriksens products as well as his fruit acid treatments, which I do on a weekly basis. Stopped using his products for the face, because they didn’t seem to help much, but I still use the fruit acid treatment once a week, but don’t think it has that wow effect.

I’ve switched to using products for the face by Murad, which should have a more in depth effect. Use it morning and evening, but my face still has breakouts and we’re talking big, sore blemishes. I don’t really know what to do, hope you can give me advice for my problems.

I exercise every day and I eat very healthily, but I eat a little bit of sweets and dairy products. I can see that you advice people to avoid that when it comes to diet. But that would be a problem for me, I cannot do without that. But still, anything unhealthy that I eat is in moderation.

At the moment, I work at a fitness centre, where it’s humid a lot, which could be a reason for my skin looking worse. I’m there 6 to 7 hours a day and as mentioned I exercise every day, and I remember to wash my face afterwards every single time.

I would love to sign up for a treatment with you, so you would be able to see my face and we could take it from there. My face is screaming for help.

Many greetings from the unhappy one.

Answer to: “Acne and exercise”

Dear Khadija,

Thank you so much for your letter. I would be happy to help you.

It sounds to me like you are a person, who is doing a lot to better your skin condition. You have tried many products and professional treatments without any improvement. My experience, both as someone who used to suffer from acne and as a skincare expert, tells me that the best thing you can do for your skin is your own daily routines. A cosmetologist can use extra products and give you a wellness treatment, but the acne treatment itself can be done in your own bathroom.

When you use skincare products that have no effect, I would definitely recommend you to stop. It is a waste of money and will only cause frustration, when you do a lot for your skin and does not see any results.

I am happy to see that you keep your body healthy by exercising. Also, I am happy to hear about your healthy diet. Regarding sugar, there is no proof of it having a negative effect on acne and blemishes. Nutritionally, it is a different story and I would recommend you to eat nuts and dried fruit instead of sweets and chocolate any day – but when it comes to acne, there is no scientific proof of a positive/negative effect of eating or not eating sugar respectively.

But regarding if cow’s milk products cause acne, there are many people who experience an improvement with their acne when it is removed from their diet. I think that you should try to avoid cow’s milk products for at least 1 month to see if that has any effect.

Regarding you working at a fitness centre, I think it is really good that you cleanse your face after training. But make sure that you do not over-cleanse your skin and use a mild cleansing product.

I wish you a super great week filled with success.
