Question: “Scars from blemishes”

Hi Mads,
On my one cheek, I’ve had a lot of blemishes, and now all I have is a red cheek with old scars. Do you have some good advice for that? Maybe something that I can eat to make it less visible?

Answer to: “Scars from blemishes”

Dear Julie,

I thank you very much for your question.

It is possible to treat scars from blemishes and acne in different ways. I will mention some of the more frequent methods here:

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is achieved by using machines with fast rotating diamond shaped wheels. Depending on how rough the wheel is, you doctor will be able to obtain a smaller or bigger effect. The procedure usually takes about half an hour to one hour, and the skin is either frozen or numbed first.

Laser treatment

Laser treatment implies using a laser to remove skin, so that new skin may be generated. This is a new procedure, and only very few studies have been done. Laser treatment looks promising, because the penetration depth is much easier to control with laser than with other methods. The procedure can take from a few minutes on a small area to an hour or more on larger areas.

Peeling

Using different types of acid to remove the top layer of the skin so that you can even out the surface of the skin.
This procedure takes about 15 minutes or so. Peeling is very often a cheaper method with good results.

Injection

By injecting material underneath the scar, it will be brought towards the surface of the skin. Collagen is often used, but it is also possible to use your own body fat, and other materials are being examined for possible future use. Collagen injections are temporary.

Saline injections
While undergoing a saline injection procedure, saline is injected directly into the scar, which will boost the production of collagen. 4 to 5 sessions, each a couple of weeks apart will normally give the best results.

I hope that everything listed above will give you some kind of overview on how you can treat scars from acne.

May you have a beautiful day!
