Question: “Cleansing + skin crème”

Dear Mads,

I’m 27 years old and want to start cleansing and maintaining my face properly. But like you learned yourself in the beginning, the world of skincare products is a jungle that’s really hard to navigate in without a guide.

I’ve tried reading on this site to find my skin type and so far I’d categorize it as “combination”. My forehead has a tendency to be shiny and greasy, even though I wash my face every morning and wipe off the “grease” during the day (I know it sounds icky). Oddly enough, the middle part of my forehead seems a bit dry. My nose tends to be shiny as well and even if I wipe it down during the day, it doesn’t take long before it’s shining away in all its glory.

As mentioned, I have no experience with skincare. So my question for you is: How do you think I should start out? In that there are sub questions like “should I cleanse my skin and then use moisturizer”. “How” should a toner and day crème be used to have the “optimal” effect? Please, recommend what I should look for (and please list some specific products) – I’m a newbie after all :-)

I really want to start as quickly as possible, so I hope you can help me. If you need info about my problem to help me in the best possible way, please feel free to ask me :-)

Have a really good evening and THANK YOU so much in advance.

Best regards,
Casper

Answer to: “Cleansing + skin crème”

Dear Casper

Thank you so much for your email and your questions. I am happy that I can help you along in the right direction in this otherwise confusing jungle that is skincare.

Great to hear that you want to start taking care of your skin, which will certainly protect it and give it more radiance: Naturally, because you have chosen some great and correct products.

Of course, skincare products has to fit your skin type. With that being said, I want to highly that many products contain irritating ingredients – even products promoted to be for sensitive skin.
For your skin type, I will recommend a mild cleansing product that you should massage on to your face morning and evening. It will remove dirt, grime and excess greasy gently. Afterwards, you should use a light crème that should contain:

  • Antioxidants (and there are hundreds of great sources for this: Green tea, red tea, vitamins, etc.)
  • Moisturizing ingredients (glycerine, hyaluronic acid, etc.)
  • AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid/ BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) = exfoliating ingredients (glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, etc.)
  • The only difference that there should be between you day créme and night crème is that the day crème should contain sunscreen that protects from both UVA and UVB rays (for example, a physical filter like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide).

To understand everything mentioned above, you almost need to have a chemical degree. Which is why I have developed some simple and effective skincare products.

I am looking forward to hearing from you again and wish you a great weekend.
