Getting the facts

Mineral makeup has become extremely popular โ€“ maybe a lot because of the word โ€œmineralโ€ and the great focus on ecology and chemical substances. And many mistakenly believe that mineral makeup is a natural product, as it has been (erroneously) impliedย  in many places.

You may know the saying โ€œyou should not believe everything you hear.โ€ The same applies in this case.

Mineral makeup is not natural!

The truth is that mineral makeup is not any better than other form of makeup. All makeup is in its own way irritating to the skin, and this also applies to mineral makeup.

The term โ€œmineral makeupโ€ has nothing to do with it being natural (i.e. a mineral), as many mistakenly believe.

Mineral makeup (or โ€œnatural makeupโ€ as it is commonly known) is in fact not at all natural. It contains an ingredient called bismuth oxychloride โ€“ an ingredient that is not found in nature.

Mineral makeup โ€“ or mineral powder โ€“ is simply a term for a type of makeup that, because it is a very fine powder, will lay an extra-fine layer on your skin. The previously mentioned bismuth oxychloride is manufactured with lead and copper mixed with chlorine and water. This creates a very fine powder similar to minerals โ€“ hence the name โ€“ that clingsย  easily to the skin.

Bismuth oxychloride is not natural, but despite this, it is a very fine makeup ingredient, much like talc.

Basically, mineral makeup is fine for your skin, but donโ€™t believe that it is more natural or better for your skin than other types of makeup.
